I used the volunteer leave at Trinity to co-host the premier of the Leicester Chinese film festival 'Electric Shadows'. It is an annual film festival co-presented by De Montfort University's Confucius Institute, the School of Humanities and Performing Arts and NGO UK-China Film Collab, that presents a series of new and classic films at the various theatres and art centres across Leicester, alongside hosting a programme of cultural events that run in parallel, such as free Mandarin lessons, heritage performances and tai chi lessons.

The festival allows for the sharing of cultural knowledge and understanding, allowing the public and stakeholders to get together, have discussions and grow together. My role on the opening night, consisted of co-hosting the premier film 'Leap of Faith' (2024) by Lina Yang. As well as introducing the many amazing performances and guest speakers ahead of the film by using my Mandarin language skills. My Chinese co-host spoke English, allowing us to nicely demonstrate that our two cultures have the ability to learn and grow together through collaboration and understanding.

This was actually the second time I have hosted this event. I was on both occasions approached through the Confucious institute at De Montfort University due to my Mandarin ability and my existing warm relationship with the institute through my studies.

My volunteer leave allowed me to take the time to host this event which not only has helped me become increasingly confident in public speaking in my second language, it has also enabled me to be involved in an event that is related to my passions of studying Mandarin and migrant histories. It is extremely rewarding using my knowledge in these areas to have a positive impact on Leicester's already vibrant and multi-cultural community through such a fantastic event. My time at De Montfort University is drawing to a close due to the completion of my undergraduate studies. However, I will continue to be involved in future events in the years to come, whether I am able to continue to co-host the event or just as a supporter.

Outside of the event, the skills and confidence gained through this volunteer experience will stay with me and continue to aid my continued personal development.
